Technical Approach & Water Level Investigation Methodology

Water level investigation borings are a rapid, targeted drilling method used to determine the depth to groundwater and the nature of shallow subsurface materials at a specific site. Unlike full-scale monitoring well installations, water level borings are typically advanced as temporary open boreholes or with temporary casing — allowing field measurement of the water table elevation before the boring is properly abandoned and the surface is restored.

For the Biltmore Park Block P investigation, IET advanced three shallow borings ranging from 12 to 21 feet below ground surface. At each boring location, the drill crew logged the soil stratigraphy encountered (typically residual clay/silt over weathered rock in the Asheville area), identified the depth at which groundwater was first encountered, and recorded the stabilized water level after allowing the borehole to equilibrate. This data provides the geotechnical and environmental consultant (WSP) with the groundwater elevation information needed for site development planning, foundation design, and stormwater management calculations.

The single-day project duration reflects the efficiency of this investigation method — three shallow borings can be completed, logged, and abandoned within a standard field day when site access is straightforward. Proper patch material restoration at each boring location ensured the site surface was returned to its pre-investigation condition, a critical consideration for active development sites like Biltmore Park where surface aesthetics and access must be maintained.

Site Geology & Hydrogeological Context

Asheville, North Carolina is located in Buncombe County within the Blue Ridge physiographic province of the Appalachian Mountains. The local geology consists of Precambrian and Paleozoic-age metamorphic and igneous rocks — predominantly gneiss, schist, and granitic intrusions — overlain by residual soils (saprolite) formed by deep in-place weathering of the parent rock. These residual soils are typically clay-rich, with variable thickness and intermixed rock fragments, creating heterogeneous subsurface conditions.

Groundwater in the Blue Ridge province occurs primarily in the weathered saprolite zone and in fractures within the underlying bedrock. The water table is generally shallow (5–20 feet bgs) and responds rapidly to precipitation events due to the steep topography and thin soil cover. The 12–21 foot boring depths at Biltmore Park Block P were sufficient to characterize the shallow water table conditions relevant to the planned development, providing WSP with the data needed for foundation design, basement/drainage planning, and geotechnical engineering assessments for this active development site in one of Asheville's growing mixed-use corridors.
