Dual-Area ISGS Remediation
Project Overview
IET performed a dual-area In-Situ Generated Solidification (ISGS) treatment program for ERM in the Atlanta, GA region. The project targeted two distinct contamination zones (MW-42 and MW-41 areas) with 25,999 lbs of ISGS amendment material, complete with neutralization services and soil sampling support.
Treatment Summary
MW-42 Area
21,162 lbs ISGS amendment with 2-day injection
MW-41 Area
4,837 lbs ISGS amendment with 1-day injection
Neutralization Services
Complete post-treatment neutralization for both areas
Support Services
Soil sampling, DPT services, and hazmat shipping

Technical Approach & ISGS Amendment Delivery
This Atlanta ISGS project delivered 25,999 lbs of ISGS amendment over a 3-day injection program for client ERM, with a total project value of $91,696. ISGS (In Situ Geochemical Stabilization) uses a modified permanganate-based amendment to chemically oxidize and polymerize NAPL in place — physically coating NAPL globules with manganese oxide precipitate and dramatically reducing contaminant flux to groundwater. The technology is licensed exclusively to IET in North America by Evonik Corporation.
The 3-day injection duration (April 27 – May 1, 2020) reflects the scale of the amendment delivery — approximately 8,666 lbs per day of ISGS amendment being mixed, pumped, and injected into the subsurface. IET's injection trailer system maintains the permanganate-based reagent in suspension and delivers it under controlled pressure to achieve the designed radius of influence around each injection point. The amendment mass of nearly 26,000 lbs indicates a substantial NAPL source zone requiring aggressive stabilization treatment.
The project included soil sampling, DPT services, and hazmat shipping as support services — reflecting the comprehensive turnkey nature of IET's ISGS deployment. The $91,696 project value encompasses amendment supply, field labor, equipment mobilization, and all support services, providing ERM with a single-vendor solution from design through implementation.
Atlanta Site Context & Georgia Geology
Atlanta, Georgia is located in Fulton County within the Piedmont physiographic province. The shallow geology consists of Precambrian and Paleozoic-age metamorphic and igneous rocks — predominantly gneiss, schist, and granite — overlain by residual soil (saprolite) formed by deep in-place weathering. The saprolite is typically clay-rich with variable thickness (10–50+ feet) and intermixed rock fragments, creating heterogeneous subsurface conditions that challenge conventional remediation approaches.
Groundwater in the Atlanta area occurs primarily in the weathered saprolite zone and in fractures within the underlying bedrock. The water table is generally shallow (5–25 feet bgs) and flows through the saprolite matrix and bedrock fractures. ISGS is effective in these Piedmont settings because the permanganate amendment can be distributed through the saprolite under pressure, and the stabilization mechanism works effectively even in the variable-permeability conditions characteristic of weathered crystalline rock terrain.
