Site Challenge

A site in Little Elm, Texas (Denton County, north of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex) needed subsurface information — soil strength, stratification, and depth to rock — for foundation and earthwork design.

Method

Three geotechnical borings advanced to 30 feet, sampled by Texas Cone Penetrometer (TCP) and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) methods, with NQ rock coring through the rock interval.

Observed Result

IET completed the borings to the specified depth and turned the penetration test record and rock core data over to the project's geotechnical engineer for design.

Limits & Caveats

This summary records the drilling scope from IET's project file: three borings to 30 feet with TCP/SPT testing and NQ rock coring, March 2024. Client name, production rates, and invoiced footage are not included. Contact IET for references and the full project record.

Scope of Work
  • Three geotechnical borings advanced to 30 feet below grade.
  • Texas Cone Penetrometer (TCP) and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) sampling to record penetration resistance with depth.
  • NQ rock coring through the rock interval, with core recovery logged for the design team.
  • Samples and test records released to the project's geotechnical engineer.
Why These Methods

Texas Cone Penetrometer (TCP)

A drive-point test widely used in Texas geotechnical practice. The cone is advanced under a fixed hammer energy and the resistance is recorded in blows per foot, giving the design engineer a direct measure of soil strength without recovering a sample.

Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

The split-spoon sampler is driven with a 140-pound hammer falling 30 inches. The blow counts support standard soil strength and density correlations, and the recovered sample is available for laboratory testing.

NQ Rock Coring

A diamond core barrel recovering a nominal 47.6 mm (1.875 inch) core. Coring documents rock type, weathering, fracturing, and recovery where the design depends on rock competence.
